Well-directed insertion of special, thin needles on nerve’s ends leads to stimulation of the spinal cord and other parts of the brain. So the transmission of a pain stimulus can be suppressed within the spinal cord already. Furthermore, neurotransmitters which are  occurring naturally in the body and painkillers (i.e. endorphins) are released.
